Status quo of biomethane market

In total currently there are almost 12.000 biogas plants in 12 European Countries, shown in figure 1. Most of them are agricultural cogeneration plants producing heat and power. The country, where most of the biogas cogeneration plants are installed is Germany, followed by Italy and Switzerland. Switzerland is the only country where more biogas plants are feeded with sewage than with agricultural fermentation substrates. 177 plants (1,5% of 11.869) are biomethane plants, where the raw biogas is upgraded to a gas quality similar to natural gas. 128 or 72% of all biomethane plants inject biomethane into the natural gas grid for further use. Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Austria have installed most of the biomethane grid injection plants.
